What this is

Pip & Dawn is one story told in eight little illustrated books: 3,739 words, a drawing for every page, and a narration that reads each book aloud over quiet water. It is free to read and to hear, with no account and no advertising, and this site is its permanent edition.

In one sentence: a small shore-dweller who measures everything befriends a creature of the sea, only to discover that love cannot make two worlds obey the same laws.

The story

Pip lives at the top of the shore, where things stay where they are put. He measures the world in leaf-lengths, breaths and tides, and writes the numbers down. One morning, at the edge of the water, something without edges looks back at him. She is called Dawn. She comes from the deep water, she cannot stay, and she cannot be measured. The eight books follow the two of them through the turning seasons, from the first meeting to the last morning, as each learns the laws of the other's world - and what those laws will not allow.

The author

A.J.Sharpe wrote Pip & Dawn and made its edition: the words, the direction of the drawings and the narration, and the site that carries them, one work by one maker. Before this he made things out of code, music and animation. This is the first he made out of sentences. He wrote the stories for a single reader, an adult, and published them for everyone invited to overhear. He gives the work freely and asks only that it travel with his name on it.

How it was made

The story was drafted and revised in an openly documented collaboration with AI tools, under written laws for the voice, the drawings and the sound. The illustrations are generated under identity-locked prompts, so the same small figure walks every page. The narration is synthesised: one voice over one low water bed. Every decision that shaped the work is recorded and dated in the project's own records, and the claim and the grant are stated at /terms.
