The Edge of the Water, page 10 of 12

Pip adjusts the last of a line of white pebbles beside a small reed backrest while Dawn watches warmly from the pool, busy and admired.

A flat place to sit. A reed rail for rough weather. A line of white pebbles down to the water, in case she ever lost her way.

Dawn admired them all and needed none of them.
